The Tirthan river flowing through the valley near Jibhi

How to reach Jibhi

Jibhi sits at about 2,250 m in the Banjar (Tirthan) valley, just off NH-305. Here's every way to get there — and the one turn most people get wrong.

By road from Delhi (~535 km, 12–14 hours)

The drive runs Delhi → Chandigarh → Bilaspur → Sundernagar → MandiAut, then off the main highway into the valley. Chandigarh to Mandi is the bulk of the climb; Mandi to Aut is about an hour on NH-305.

The turn everyone gets wrong: at Aut, do not enter the Aut tunnel — that road heads to Kullu and Manali. Take the right fork just before the tunnel onto the NH-305 branch toward Banjar. From Aut it is roughly 24 km to Banjar (about 45 minutes) along the Tirthan river, then another 8–10 km to Jibhi.

By road from Chandigarh (~310 km, 7–8 hours)

Same final stretch via Mandi and Aut. Chandigarh is the most popular starting point because it has the nearest well-connected airport and railway station.

By air

Bhuntar (Kullu–Manali) airport is the closest, about 50–60 km away (2–2.5 hours by taxi). Flights are limited and seasonal, so check schedules directly with the airlines. Chandigarh airport (~310 km) is the practical choice for most — fly in and drive or take a cab.

By train

The nearest convenient broad-gauge railhead is Chandigarh (~310 km), well connected to Delhi, Mumbai and beyond. The scenic Joginder Nagar narrow-gauge line is closer (~100–120 km) but the train is very slow — better as an experience than a way to actually reach Jibhi.

By bus

Overnight Volvo and HRTC buses run from Delhi (Kashmere Gate ISBT) toward Kullu and Manali — alight at Aut (about 8–9 hours). From Aut, take a local HRTC bus to Banjar or a private taxi straight to Jibhi (roughly ₹800–1,200 per vehicle). Book buses on HRTC, RedBus or AbhiBus.

One tip for the last leg

The Aut–Banjar road is narrow and winding as it follows the river gorge. If you are prone to motion sickness, take something about 30 minutes before that stretch.

Frequently asked questions

How far is Jibhi from Delhi?

About 535 km by road — a 12–14 hour drive via Chandigarh, Mandi and Aut. Many travellers do it overnight or break the journey at Chandigarh or Mandi.

What is the nearest airport to Jibhi?

Bhuntar (Kullu–Manali) airport, about 50–60 km away (2–2.5 hours by taxi), but flights are limited and seasonal. Chandigarh airport (~310 km) has far better connectivity, so many travellers fly to Chandigarh and drive.

Do I drive through the Aut tunnel to reach Jibhi?

No — and this is the most common mistake. At Aut, take the right fork onto NH-305 toward Banjar BEFORE the tunnel. The Aut tunnel itself leads to Kullu and Manali.

What is the nearest railway station to Jibhi?

The practical broad-gauge railhead is Chandigarh (~310 km). Joginder Nagar narrow-gauge station is closer (~100–120 km) but the heritage train is very slow and not practical for most trips.
